Tatra National Park management personnel deploy trail cameras in the field to monitor animals, keep watch over conserved areas and expose illegal activities in the territory of the national park. Trail cameras are installed on paths, sources of water, source of foods, resting places and areas with animal sign and marking activity.
Motion sensors are built-in to the trail cameras to take pictures or record video sequences when motion is detected in their field of vision. The memory card inside the trail camera records the current date, time and outdoor air temperature. LED flash allows the trail cameras to operate in the dark, which is a major advantage, in particular when tracking nocturnal species.
The trail cameras are primarily utilised within fauna monitoring activities to determine the presence and population of large predators. They are also used on a regular basis to monitor marmot colonies, the nests and feeding areas of birds of prey, the dens of badgers and other animal species, allowing us to learn a great deal of interesting information about them.
